The Code of Ethics Legal Interpreters Should Follow

Legal interpreting services are looking to hire individuals who have a high level of integrity and professionalism. Knowing the job is one thing, being good at it is another. Legal interpreters must know their second language as if it were their first if they plan to offer their clients the best possible service. The strict code of ethics and procedures legal interpreters must follow is in place to ensure that clients get the unbiased help they need during a stressful time.

Here is the list of professional and ethical characteristics every legal interpreter should follow:

Accuracy

Professional Legal Interpreters

Accuracy is of the utmost importance when interpreting legal issues from one person to another during a court case. An interpreter must understand even the subtlest of nuances of a language, so they can relay exactly what is happening and what is being said between both parties.

Impartiality

Impartiality and neutrality is also extremely important. It is the reporter’s job to relay the information as accurately as possible without interpreting or judging what either party means. They are a messenger and should not influence either party in any way.

Sufficient Preparation

This involves being up to speed on any previous hearings, interviews or statements that have been provided to you by the court. Know the case and understand what the court is trying to achieve, so that you are capable of relaying the most reliable and accurate information possible.

Legal interpreting services offer clients both impartial and accurate support so that their legal case is handled in a just and dignified manner. Each interpreter is bound by the legal code of ethics of their profession and is dedicated to being as proficient as possible.
