Legal translation is a unique field that relies on explicit knowledge of two distinct languages, as well as a working understanding of the law. It is of the utmost importance when going from one language to another that the translation is as accurate and complete as possible.
Create a List of Common Keywords
Create a complete list of common keywords that are used throughout the case and make sure the terms are understood and the translation is accurate for each one.
Know and Understand the Law
The translator must have a working knowledge of the law as it pertains to the case and understands how it is applied. They must be able to accurately translate this throughout the interview or deposition.
Security Is Priority One
In addition to accuracy, security is a main priority. It is important to protect the rights of the individual who is being interviewed as well as whoever else may be involved in the case.
Be Precise About What Is to Be Translated
It is important for the translator to know exactly what is to be translated and in what context. A guideline should be followed as to what questions need to be asked or what statements should be translated.
Know the Language/Dialect That Will Be Used
Each language has dialects that should be considered during the translation process. Make sure to acknowledge subtle nuances to ensure the document is as accurate as possible.
Legal translation and transcription is a unique field as those who choose to enter it must have great attention-to-detail. They should also be able to handle themselves in a professional manner at all times.
