A person who works as a legal transcriptionist must take initiative if they plan on being successful. Legal transcription requires a commitment to excellence. If a person wants to succeed, they must always strive to meet or exceed the expectations of their clients.
Lack of Organization
Being unorganized can cost both time and money. A person who does not keep their work area well organized can lose items they need to complete their job. They will end up wasting time that would be better spent working on their projects.
Overscheduling
Overscheduling is a huge mistake. Not only does it force the transcriptionist to rush, it will also cause them to make mistakes. Scheduling too many projects each day can also result in missed deadlines. Continually missing deadlines can result in clients pulling their accounts.
Poor Work Ethic
It is extremely important to have a solid work ethic. If a transcriptionist cannot dedicate an appropriate amount of time to completing their scheduled tasks, they will have little chance of succeeding in the legal transcription field. Many legal documents are time sensitive and must be completed in a timely fashion.
Insufficient Knowledge of the Terminology
A transcriptionist who works in the legal transcription field must be well versed in legal terminology. If that transcriptionist attempts to produce legal documents without having sufficient knowledge of the terms that are used and their spelling, errors can occur that can cause the document to be filled with inaccuracies.
Lack of Diligence
One of the most common reasons that transcriptionists fail in the field of legal transcription is lack of diligence. Not proofreading or checking their work can result in a poorly formatted document that is full of errors. Always double check each document for proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
