Internship: How It Benefits an Aspiring Court Reporter

Many schools that offer court reporting educational courses have a mandatory internship program that each student must participate in. Students are often encouraged to sit with court reporters while they work so they can observe the many facets of the job. They are allowed to follow the reporter throughout the day so they can see for themselves what happens outside the court room.

Is an Internship Needed?
Students may wonder if an internship is actually needed to be an efficient and successful court reporter. Being able to sit with a reporter while they work gives the student the opportunity to see every step of the process. It also allows them to see the intensity of the work environment during heated court hearings. They get a personal feel for the timing that is needed during an actual hearing as well as importance of the court reporter’s commitment to accuracy.

How an Internship Helps Achieve Success
Students who enter into and successfully complete an internship gain insight that cannot be found inside a classroom. By actually being in the work environment and allowed to observe, and in some cases actually work, they receive a hands-on experience that makes it easier for transition into an actual job opening. They do not lose work time because they are already fully trained and ready to begin work immediately after graduation. Although every office is different in how they handle certain situations, the basic precepts and duties of the job are identical. Completing a court reporter internship program also gives the new employee a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence they need to work in a new company.
