How many occupations can you name that are recession-proof? One of the first that comes to mind should be court reporting. Not only is there always a need for this work in the legal industry, the demand keeps growing.
In fact, the Occupational Outlook Handbook indicates that court reporting jobs will expand by almost 25 percent within the next decade.

Reasons Why Court Reporting is Recession-Proof:
Court reporters are in great demand during recession because you can’t give court reporting to an individual who is not qualified to do this work as it requires schooling, certification, and months of training to be a court reporter.
Recessions also tend to be time periods with increased bankruptcies and foreclosures, which involve people seeking legal assistance that they would not ordinarily deal with.
While court reporters can find work outside of law firms doing transcription services, there are plenty of opportunities to find with law firms, which need court reporters for depositions.
Documentation of witness responses to questions posed by attorneys is needed at these meetings prior to a trial. It’s a part of compiling evidence for a court case.
In order to establish credentials as a court reporter, you will need to enroll in a university or business college. Then, you will need to pass a state exam.
The best way to find work is by becoming affiliated with a deposition services agency, which is where law firms commonly hire court reporters. Many times character is a key quality they are looking for, as they seek non- judgmental reporters who produce accurate transcripts quickly.
