Respect and etiquette are the two mainstays when it comes to being successful in the legal world. This involves using proper business etiquettes and treating others the way you want to be treated. In the legal field, you will be working with other legal professionals as well as the public. Maintaining positive relationships with both is essential if you intend to be successful in your career.
Always be on time as punctuality is important for many reasons. Most professionals, especially in the legal field, keep a tight schedule. Being even a few minutes late can throw off your entire day. Instead of risking a late arrival, plan to arrive with some spare time before an appointment. This will be especially helpful if you run into unexpected events.
Always dress for success. A professional getup is a must for any important legal functions, such as depositions, hearings, or other court appearances. Looking your best for these important events will give you the confidence you need to take control of any situation.
Learn to be an effective listener. Don’t just listen to what is being said and take notes. Make eye contact and take note of facial expressions. Be aware of changes in a person’s tone as they are speaking. Try to pick up subtle changes in how they compose themselves. To listen effectively, you need to be able to hear more than just the words they are speaking and observe their body language as well.
Being courteous and minding your manners will reap many rewards. Even in difficult situations, maintaining polite and courteous manners may be able to smooth things over and get you the results you are looking for. It will also earn you the respect you deserve. Following the golden rule will encourage others to give you the same kindness and respect.
Eliminating distractions means focusing on the person in front of you. Whether it’s someone calling your cell phone or responding to important business emails, you need to focus on giving your scheduled audience the undivided attention they deserve.
When working in the legal field or any business, using proper etiquette is essential to ensure success. At Jilio-Ryan Court Reporters, we understand the need for proper business etiquette and strive to meet or exceed each of our client’s expectations.
