Most professionals, including court reporters, run the risk of damaging their reputations if they lose their temper on the job. Unless you’re an admired celebrity, getting too angry in front of colleagues is usually frowned upon and can weaken a relationship. Just like other professionals, the key to maintaining your composure as a court reporter is discovering what works for you.
Deep breathing is one of the most overlooked keys to resolving heated arguments, as it helps people cool off. Taking a deep breath helps reset your nerves and gain a fresh perspective. The more you can relax about a negative situation, the sooner you can focus on the solution more than the problem.
Writing down the situation that has triggered your temper will help you visualize what needs to be done to resolve the problem. Combining a physical activity such as writing or typing with thinking about the problem will help you approach the scenario with more logic and less emotion. It’s not necessary to keep permanent records of these thoughts.
If you experience a pattern of losing your temper, you need to identify events that trigger your anger and then avoid them. Sometimes specific topics can spark disagreements. In cases that you cannot control, such as the behavior of other co-workers, you may need to consider a new job or work environment.
Laughing is one of the best ways to resolve anger and depression. Whether you are laughing at an entertaining performance, a joke or a memory, it’s a healthy activity that puts anyone, even court reporters, in a better mood.
By merely talking with a friend or writing them an email can diffuse anger and help you relax. Communicating with a friend about something positive keeps you in a friendly mode.
Remember that raising your temper is more likely to make problems worse, whereas communicating in a friendly manner helps create a balanced atmosphere that is better suited for problem-solving.
